Why the smallest acts of rebellion can lead to the biggest breakthroughs.
Scare Your Soul Challenge: The Tiny Rebellions Challenge
Bottom line: Sometimes the bravest transformations start with changing your coffee order
Dear Courageous Souls (and Secret Rebels),
There I was, staring at my morning coffee like it had just told me we “needed to talk."
For years - literally years - my morning ritual had been the same:
Wake up.
Stumble to kitchen.
Pour coffee.
Add copious amounts of oat milk.
Repeat.
It was my personal version of "Groundhog Day," minus Bill Murray and with significantly more caffeine.
But now? A small device on my arm was telling me a story my habits didn't want to hear.
Let me back up.
Thanks to my ever-wise girlfriend Dana and my friend Greg Stock (who wrote the original "Book of Questions" - talk about someone who knows how to shake things up), I recently strapped on a continuous glucose monitor called "Lingo." Think of it as a tiny detective that follows your blood sugar around all day, taking notes and judging your life choices.
And boy, did it have opinions about my beloved oat milk coffee routine.
Here's where it gets interesting. This little rebellion against my morning ritual? It sparked something. Like pulling a loose thread on a sweater, suddenly everything started to unravel - in the best possible way.
No dessert after dinner. (My sweet tooth is filing for divorce.)
A protein-packed breakfast instead of my usual carb-loaded bagel. (Sorry, local bagel shop - it's not you, it's my glucose levels.)
And the wildest part? These tiny acts of rebellion started spilling into other areas of my life.
Which got me thinking...
What if the path to courage isn't about grand gestures or life-altering decisions? What if it's about these tiny rebellions against our own autopilot?
Take my friend Julie Dery, one of our first Scare Your Soul ambassadors. She recently told me about changing her nail polish color - a small act that felt surprisingly significant. It's like she was saying to the world (and herself), "Hey, I can be unpredictable!"
The science backs this up. Research shows that small pattern interrupts create new neural pathways in our brains. It's like doing CrossFit for your courage muscles, but instead of burpees, you're:
- Taking a different route to work
- Speaking to strangers in elevators (yes, even when your phone is right there, begging for attention)
- Sitting alone at a restaurant with no digital security blanket
- Saying "no" when your people-pleasing heart screams "yes, of course, whatever you need!"
This week's Scare Your Soul Challenge: Choose Your Tiny Rebellion
1. Pick one small routine or habit you do on autopilot
2. Deliberately do it differently for just one day
3. Notice how it feels - the discomfort, the surprise, maybe even the delight
4. Share your tiny rebellion in the comments - your small act of courage might inspire someone else's!
Remember: The pearl starts with a grain of sand.
The avalanche begins with a single snowflake.
And sometimes, the biggest changes start with switching up your coffee order. 🌟
With courage, curiosity, and a slightly different breakfast menu,
Scott
