A Permission Slip To Do What You Need to Do
Putting something off? Here's when you should do it, and why.
A confession.
Two months after signing an exciting book deal - my first ever - I contacted a ghostwriter.
It had been weeks of sitting in front of a blinking cursor on my computer screen, not knowing how - or what - to write. With each passing day, the anxiety climbed. And so, I cast out the line in hopes of catching someone who could save me from embarrassment and dismal defeat. I didn’t know if that meant someone writing for me … or with me.
I just knew that I needed to be rescued.
Laurie was to be my savior. She was experienced and came with impeccable qualifications. I sent her my proposal and, on a Sunday morning, we spoke. She had read my ideas and wanted to know more: Why was I writing it? What inside me compels me to help other people? What joy did I get in the work of Scare Your Soul?
I wasn’t prepared for this, I told her. I didn’t want to fail. So many other people had written about fear and courage. What could I possibly add to the conversation? I ticked off authors whose works were seminal to me: Gladwell, Brown, Sinek, Dweck. As I mentioned each one I sank deeper into despair.
And then she said: “You’re going to write this. Every word.”
Gulp.
“You’re writing about being courageous and harnessing fear. And you’re going to step right into the fire. You can do it. And you WILL do it.”
And that is what I did.
My book - soon to be released - is the outcome of that permission slip she handed me. You’re on the right track, she seemed to be saying. You can do this. I’m giving you permission to be courageous.
All I needed, it turned out, was that permission slip … to do exactly what I needed to do.
Your Scare Your Soul challenge for this week is to:
Accept our Permission Slip To Do What You Need to Do
…
What is one thing that you need to do that you aren’t doing?
What has been sitting in the back of your mind?
What brings up feelings of fear for you?
What do you need a permission slip to be able to do?
Just like Laurie did for me, I am doing for you now.
So, here it is: DO IT. That thing that you have been putting off because it feels un-doable? DO IT. That thing that feels so hard that you would do almost anything in its place?
DO IT.
That thing that the universe, karma, God, the ecstatic vibration … whatever it is that has delivered this possibility to you?
DO IT.
All of the fears, doubts, and what-ifs are nothing in comparison to just getting started. It’s the hardest thing to do, but more often than not, things will fall into place if you just…
DO IT.
NOW.
Good vibes and best of luck,
